The CALC Council and the Office of the Legislative Counsel for Wales are pleased to announce that the CALC European Region Conference is now open for booking. As previously announced, the conference will take place in Cardiff / Caerdydd, Wales, on 24 and 25 May. It will be held in the Principality Stadium in the centre of Cardiff, with dinner on 24 May in the historic Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff Bay.
Registration and fees
The conference costs £240 (GBP). This covers both days of the conference, including food and drink, and dinner in the Coal Exchange Hotel.
The Registration form is here: http://eepurl.com/ihKw7r. There is also a link to the form on the CALC website.
Following the submission of the registration form, delegates will receive an email confirmation with a link to a welcome pack and further information about the conference (including about travel and accommodation) will be available on a dedicated website. Please allow 2-3 working days for this email to arrive. Please also check your junk/spam folder if the email doesn’t arrive in your main mailbox. The welcome pack will contain all the information needed to assist you in planning your visit. Delegates will need to make their own transport arrangements and hotel reservations.
It is not necessary to be a CALC member to attend, nor is it necessary to be working in a European jurisdiction. We would, however, encourage any non-members who wish to attend to join CALC as a full or associate member. Membership is free, and brings a number of benefits – there is more information on the CALC website membership page.
Call for papers
We are in the process of putting together an excellent programme, with speakers from Canada, the US Congress, the Commonwealth Secretariat and across Europe, representing the drafting community, academia, the judiciary and more.
We are also seeking submissions for papers. We would especially welcome papers on matters of particular interest to drafters working in European jurisdictions. Papers should be relatively short, with successful submissions being granted a slot of around 15 minutes at the conference.
If you wish to submit a paper, please send a 100 word abstract, and a 50 word bio, to legislativecodesoffice@gov.wales, with the subject line “Submission for CALC Europe Conference”. The closing date for submissions is 31 March 2023.
We would also welcome submissions on other kinds of session. For example, if you wish to hold a workshop, a Q & A session, or some other event during the conference, please email us at the above address using the same subject line, by 31 March.
Other conferences coming soon
This is the first of a number of CALC events being planned for this year and next. A CALC Asia-Pacific Conference will be held on 2 to 4 August 2023 in Sydney, Australia and we hope to be able to confirm dates soon for a CALC Africa Conference in Mombasa, Kenya in October 2023. The next full CALC Conference is being planned for the Caribbean during 2024.
