It is with great sorrow that the IAL and each and every of its members receive the sad news of the passing of our founder and Honorary President Professor Ulrich Karpen.

Ulrich’s contribution to the field of legislation and his grasp, both at a national and comparative levels, is unparallel to anyone else’s. Ulrich had a great interest in producing both a theory and a practice for good legislation, which was innovative and generous. Equally generous was his devotion to widening access to legislative studies, to nurturing junior colleagues, and to establishing a collaborative network of drafters who could collectively work together to promote good law.

On a personal level, Ulrich was a hug that embraced every new member, every colleague. He is already sorely missed, but will never be forgotten.

The IAL offers sincere condolences to his wife, Barbara, and the rest of his family.

A sad day for the IAL and the world of drafting.

RIP.
