The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies will host an online lecture titled “Who is legislation written for?” on 30 April 2026 (16:00–17:30, London time).

The event will feature Helen Xanthaki (UCL Faculty of Laws) and Mauro Zamboni (Stockholm University), who will discuss one of the central questions in legislative studies: who is the intended audience of legislation. While traditional approaches often assume that legislation is primarily addressed to lawyers and judges, contemporary legislative drafting increasingly recognises a wider range of users, including professionals, experts and lay readers.

The discussion will explore how different assumptions about legislative audiences influence drafting choices, the accessibility of legal texts, and the broader design of legislation.

The event is free and open to all, but registration is required.
